Excellent Presentation of a Complicated Subject
The book's subtitle says that it's a "Layman's Complete Guide to Bloodless Medicine and Surgery". Well I doubted THAT (having just read "Dailey's Notes on Blood" which even though written in a simple and concise way can still be kinda tough going) but I purchased it anyway because I'm deeply interested in the subject of transfusion free medicine. What a surprise I received!

1ST of all I was impressed by the physical presentation of the book itself. It is printed on glossy paper. There are numerous full-color photos and graphic illustrations. Along the way are a number of concise charts that nicely sum up or enhance the information presented in the text. There are a number of appendices at the end, which contain additional detailed information presented in a clear way, a glossary of medical terms used and a bibliography for each chapter.

The text itself is clear and well-written with the layman in view. The book gives a clear and well-rounded description of the components of blood and the circulatory system. (After reading this book my understanding of "Dailey's Notes on Blood" was greatly enhanced.) It gives the reasons why many doctors began looking for an alternative to blood transfusions. It highlights the evidence that is causing many well-respected doctors to come to the conclusion that bloodless surgery is not just an alternative procedure but is in fact the state of the art today. It, also, explains the different techniques and instruments used in bloodless surgery.

This book was such a joy to read that I read it twice in two weeks time. I even purchased several copies and gave them to friends. The authors and publishers have both done an excellent job in presenting, in such an understandable way, this important medical information.

A Bad Case of Stripes

I haven't met a kid who doesn't love this book
This is one of my all-time favorite children's books. I used to work at a preschool, and it was a huge hit with the 3 to 6 year-olds (though older children will enjoy it too). The kids would actually cheer when I brought out this book at story time. Though the main character is a girl, the book has just as much appeal for boys.

The message is simple and timeless: Be true to yourself. But what sets this book apart from countless others with the same theme is the wit and wordplay of the text, and the colorfully surreal illustrations. Kids don't glance at the pictures in here -- they look and look, and ask you to turn back the page so they can look some more.

You'll enjoy reading this one out loud. And if it becomes a favorite, you won't mind reading it again and again.

A modern classic!
Well, I was cruising through the library stacks, looking for the author of "No, David!" (another outstanding book) when I came across this piece of magic. The illustrations are works of art, the writing is tight and lyrical, the dialogue is beyond what you would expect to find in writing for "mere children." Cross "Madeline" with Roald Dahl and you've got an idea of what you're in store for!

The story, if you haven't gleaned it from other reviews, is that Camilla has decided to be untrue to herself by denying herself her one great love in life - lima beans by the steaming plateful. As a result of the obvious internal angst over her leguminous desire and her need to do what she perceives as cool, her body rebels and does the most uncool thing of all - it covers itself in a rainbow of stripes. Things get worse when Camilla is allowed by the family doctor to go to school - the stripes start shifting colors and shapes at the whim of the other students. Eventually, she is forced to stay home, thanks to the voiced concerns of frightened parents. The final showdown comes as pandemonium erupts when the local television stations discover this oddity in their town.

This book will charm children of all ages - my ten-year-old couldn't believe what she was hearing from her sister's bedroom as I read it aloud before bedtime. Grab this book and embrace it as the treasure it is.

A great read aloud!
This is a great read aloud for any age. I read it to my sixth graders and my third graders and both classes loved this book. David Shannon has done it again. In this book he teaches a lesson of knowing who we are and not following the crowd. The main character, Camilla Cream is worried about what to wear the first day of school, as she has so many friends to impress. After trying on forty-two outfits she looks in the mirror and screams. She has broken out with a bad case of stripes. This is a hillarious story of what Camilla has to go through with her case of stripes. Davis Shannon's illustrations add so much to the story. The cover itself will attract readers. I have decided that David Shannon is my new favorite author and illustrator. I highly recommend this book.

Winning Every Day: Gold Medal Advice for a Happy, Healthy Life!
Published in Paperback by Bantam Doubleday Dell Pub (Juv (June, 1998)
Authors: Shannon Miller and Nancy Ann Richardson
Average review score:

Good, not great...
This book's a good one, but not a great book at all. Shannon does come across as a little too perfect, and I simply have trouble believing that the diary entries were written exactly the way they're printed in the book. Although, Shannon does seem like a perfectionist (even though she says she's not) maybe they were written that way, it just seems a little "too perfect" and I believe the entries were either heavily edited or parts added in for the book. I think this book could be very helpful to younger gymnasts though, and I suspect Shannon wrote it for that very purpose and not to just tell people about her life. While I don't think the autobiographical stuff is truly worth reading, the statements she makes about time management etc., would definately be helpful to any young person looking for a way to be able to balance any activity they do along with school and family. After all, she's managed to balance a great challenge, going to school and being a world class Olympic athlete at the same time, and care a great deal about both. I don't put much of a criticism on Shannon for pretty much tooting her own horn in the book, it's hers, she should be able to talk about getting good grades as well as being a great athlete as much as she wants. Every athlete/politican/regular person who's ever written an autobiography does the same thing, in some ways at least. By doing so I believe it gives a better background into her message to young athletes about time management etc., being necessary things to do if you truly want to succeed at more than one thing at a time that require as much effort as school and being a world class gymnast. Shannon and her co author seem to both realize that it's not enough for her to write that her system works, but she's also got to show young athletes that it works, and the proof is in those grades and Olympic medals. Just writing, "My system works, use it" won't sell very far with young people. However, if you want to read a truly good book about Shannon the person and not just what's really a "motivational" book, I'd recommend Shannon's mother's book over this one.

Very Inspirational
I enjoyed this book and it covered a lot of fabulous topics about gymnastics, school and social life, as well as the sacrifices and efforts she made to become an Olympian. My only criticism was that b/c Shannon comes across as a private person (I don't blame her) the parts about her personal life seemed brief. What I really admire about this young woman is her strength and attitude. I disagree with the rating that said Shannon portrayed herself as 'too perfect'. Shannon is a wonderful gymnast, a fabulous student, a spiritually-connected woman who is close with her family and friends, and demonstrates huge self-discipline to maintain being the best she can be. As far as I'm concerned, she is pretty darned close to perfect. Actually, I was impressed that Shannon acknowledged the intense effort and commitment to get her to where she is. She didn't make it all out to be peaches and cream, yet she has such a positive attitude. She is definitely the most decorated gymnast! I would especially recommend this to younger gymnasts - it's easy to read and it gets to the point!

Awsome
This book is a must for Shannon Miller Fans. I really enjoyed reading the Diary entrys and the Pictures were the Best. Hearing Shannon's opinions on Everything from her regular life to her Gymnastics career is what makes this book so special. Un like other books written by gymnasts its not a book just about her accomplishments in Gymnastics.

ModCon: The Secret World Of Extreme Body Modification
Published in Paperback by BMEbooks (18 March, 2002)
Author: Shannon Larratt
Average review score:

Inspiration
ModCon was an event that has inspired me, and doubtlessly this book will be an inspiration to those who read it with an open mind. Any person who picks up the book to not only inspect the pictures but read the captions/interviews along with them will learn something new. It's a book. On the surface, a book about extreme body modifications. As a whole, something so much more. It's hard to explain exactly how I've changed because of this book/event, but I do know that the people who fill the pages of this book and bear their souls so others may learn are amazing. As is Shannon Larrat: creator of BME... and creator of this book.
I'm biased. I've been educated by ModCon. I have the honor of being in the book itself. This book will be a valued treasure to the person intrested in extreme body modification. The articles and interviews will explain intents, procedures, rammifications, and so much more.

Inviting...
I had always been a fan of body modification since buying my first copy of Modern Primitives 13 years ago. Shannon Larratt really takes the reader into this secret world and shows the people behind the modifications and their stories. These stories, interviews and beautiful photography will really make this book a body modification "classic" alongside Modern Primitives.

Modify your mind
This book is peep into the world of extreme body modification. It goes well beyond tattooing and piercing that most people are familiar with and provides (plenty of) photos, and interviews with the people who practice these forms of modification (implants for exaple).
The book really is fascinating. There are mods that you may have heard of, and thought why would anyone do that? Well the interviews in this book give and insight into the reasons behind the mods. And anyone who thinks that body modification is a symptom of a sick mind, could do a lot lot worse than read the exceptionally well easoned arguments for why these people do what tehy do to their bodies.
I've said it once, and I'll say it again, this is a fascinating book that you will genuinely find hard to put down.

No, David!
Published in Misc. Supplies by Galison Books (May, 1901)
Author: David Shannon
Average review score:

Surprisingly unappealing to my 2 year old
I spend a lot of time telling my two year old son "No!", so I bought this book to reassure him that I still love him anyway. Some of the reviews talked about crying, frightened children, and I thought those parents must have no sense of humor at all. Imagine my surprise when my son, who loves to be read to, *hated* the book. I guess the pictures of the pointy-toothed, gaping-mouthed child scared him, no matter how lighthearted I tried to make it. Now when I pull it off the shelf, he yells, "No, no, no!" and pushes it away. Maybe he's just too young for it, because personally, *I* loved the book. I told my husband, "But it won a Caldecott!" and he said, "Who was on the committee, Herman Munster?" I'd give it five stars for art quality and sentiment, but because my son can't stand it, I don't feel right giving it more than two.

No, David! Is A Big Yes
David Shannon's book, No, David, is definitely a hit! While the book is recommended for ages 3-6 years, my 9-10 year old 4th grade students just love it! This is more than the story of David, it is the story of us all at some point in our childhood. The artwork is captivating in its simplicity and the chorus of "No, David" is impossible not to join. I should also mention that I am married to a David just like the one in the book. His mom gave him this book for Christmas and it has quickly become a family favorite. For anyone who have experienced childhood, this is a must-read!!

I have met "No David."
The adult David in my life I know acted as the child in David Shannons' book "No David." I purchased the book for my "David" for Christmas and it was the gift that was shared the most with friends and family. I highly recommend this book to those with an individual in their life child or an adult who doesn't understand the meaning of "NO!" The artwork is delightful and captivating and is the type of book that will be well treasured on the shelf to be read again and again. To David Shannons mother the thoughts of... better days are coming... must have been thought frequently when her David was a child. Be sure to enjoy this book with someone and make them smile!

Night of the Beast
Published in Paperback by Medium Rare Books (17 August, 2002)
Author: Harry Shannon
Average review score:

An Old Fashioned Scarefest
Having received Harry Shannon's Night of the Beast and also having heard so many good things about it, I picked it up yesterday and I'm about 100 pages from completing it. I had little doubt that I'd like it, as so many astute readers and authors have praised it.

Sacred Indian Grounds and Ancient Evil are just about the hoariest clichés in the horror field. Right up there with bloodsucking vampires. In Night of the Beast, Harry Shannon proves that there are no tired ideas or genres; only poorly executed ones. Which excludes this fun book. Harry obviously loves the genre and this story could have come up in the glory days of the mid 1080's. A burnt out songwriter flees LA to his boyhood home, where something seems to be VERY wrong. Many of his old friends are still there, and they are glad to see him, but strange things are happening to them.

No, this isn't a blazingly original plot, but Harry clearly states in his introduction that Night of the Beast wasn't intended to be. It is a labor of love and is intended to be a lot of fun. Does he succeed? I'd say, YES. I'm enjoying the hell out of NotB and I heartily recommend it to those old enough to remember the old days and also to younger readers who are just looking to have a great, scary time reading a pulpy novel. The pages fly, but not at the expense of the characters, which is really where the heart of this novel seems to be. I've said it again and again, that's what great fiction is all about; the characters and whether we care enough about them to keep reading until the end. Harry Shannon has assembled a lovable assortment of small town eccentrics that keeps this novel's pace going strong.

If I had to compare Night of the Beast with any other author's works that I've read, I'd say Rick Hautala or Joseph Citro or even Bentley Little. I even see a bit of early Stephen King in these pages.

If one cares enough to look for these things, I see Night of the Beast working on different levels as well. It appears to me to be about redemption and exorcising personal demons from our minds and our past. In his intro, Harry is pretty forthright about the hurdles he had to overcome during the long passage of this book's struggle for life. I get the feeling that even had this novel never seen publication, it would have been remarkably therapeutic for the author to create.

However, Night of the Beast did see publication, from a small press horror outlet. That's very nice, but this book deserves more. It would be a perfect entry in Leisure Books' line of paperback titles. Even before I'm actually finished it, I can tell it's a lot more engaging than some of the Leisure Books I've read in the last couple of years.

Taut & Visceral - This is great horror!
One of the best things about Harry Shannon's book NIGHT OF THE BEAST, is that he is supremely adept at drawing the reader into their own memories while a character goes through the same. One of the earliest examples of this occurs when a character comes across a dead dog and recalls his own childhood experience with a mangy mutt and the perfect little girl who helped him care for the animal. In the short space of two pages, Shannon plunges your emotions on a roller-coaster ride of happiness, excitement, love, heartbreak, and agony - and that's just one simple flashback! Throughout this fine book, Shannon weaves a tale of horror - yes - but this book is also a masterpiece of human condition. The intricate and interesting lives of several characters coincide beautifully, producing a scary page-turner reminiscent of the great horror novels of yesteryear. This is a multi-layered book that reaches into the hearts and minds of all readers, leading them along a twisted maze of chills and excitement. Don't miss this excellent read by one of horror's brightest new stars.

Drawn in
Not being one who usually reads horrors/thrillers, when Night of the Beast was recommended to me, I hesitated to read it. Needless to say, I found myself drawn into Harry Shannon's small Nevada town and the characters he has created. From start to finish, I was enthralled, and I read the book quickly and voraciously. Night of the Beast is a book I highly recommend, especially to all those out there like me, who usually steer away from this genre. Read it. You'll definitely be taken in as his story unfolds, and as the truth is revealed, you'll learn something about the darkness we all have lurking within.

B-More Careful: A Novel

Author: Shannon Holmes
Average review score:

Keeping it R.E.A.L on the streets
If you thought you knew what the streets were about, there is still much more to be realized. Shannon Holmes bears all in this novel where nothing is sugar coated, and every action has its consequence. Holmes keeps it real in this vivid book about the life of one luscious, low-down girl named Netta. Living in the thugged out streets of Baltimore with no father and a junkie for a mother, Netta must find a way to escape from the madness that is her life. Finding some comfort in clothes and money Netta takes her first steps into the "game". When she meets Mimi the two of them bring it like it has never been brought before. Surrounded by the rest of the Pu**y Pound, they rule the streets where no good is the only good, and every day is an opportiunity to be rich. B-More Careful is a page turning thriller full of suspense, action, deception, betrayal, and revenge. As a contemporary novel, B-More Careful touches on everyday issues that spark hours of endless conversation. It was definitely a great read. Shannon Holmes should write a sequel!

Dont' Be Tricked Read B-More Careful
I DIDN'T THINK I WOULD LIKE THIS BOOK BECAUSE I COULDN'T RELATE TO THE LIFE STYLE OF THE STREETS OF BALTIMORE OR THE WAY NETTA AND MIMI'S FAMILY LIFE AND ENVIROMENT WAS. I THOUGHT YOU CAN ONLY LIKE A BOOK IF YOU CAN RELATE TO IT...BUT I WAS WRONG. I REALLY LIKED THE BOOK AND ONCE I GOT PAST THE FIRST FEW SLOW CHAPTERS, I WAS HOOKED AND I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. ALSO I COULD RELATE TO THE BOOK IN MY OWN WAYS. THE WAY THAT NETTA WAS WITH LOVE AND THE WAY THEIR FRIENDSHIP (HER AND MIMI'S) WAS I COULD RELATE TO IN A LOT OF WAYS. THE CHARACTER BLACK REPRESENTS REAL DRUG DEALERS AND WHY THEY DEAL DRUGS. THE BOOK SPLIT UP THE LIVES OF THE CHARACTERS IN SEPARATE SECTIONS AND SHOWED THE SIDES OF "THE PUSSY POUND", THE GUYS THEY LEFT AN IMPRESSION ON, AND THEIR FAMILIES. IT GAVE A VIVID DESCRIPTION OF EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING THEY WERE ABOUT, EVEN DOWN TO THE SCARS ON THEIR FACE. IT REMINDS ME OF "THE COLDEST WINTER EVER", BUT IT IS MUCH MORE INTERESTING. IT WAS ENTERTAINING AND ALSO TEACHES PEOPLE STUFF. I REALLY LIKED THE BOOK AND I THINK YOU GUYS WILL TOO, SO YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY READ IT. I WOULD RATE IT A 5.

a must read!
first i am going to say this the authour is a man. i am saying this only because in the reviews i read said ms.holmes and i was on the website of terri woods and shannon holmes and he is the author. second i want to say for those who write reviews please do not tell the book. i read one person's review and they were telling the beginning of the story i mean telling the book on what happened. which is not cool. just tell people certain details to a certain degree. well anyway this book is wonderful! it has a lot of action drama and it is definelty a page turner i guarantee that. do not judge a book by its cover it looks like its boring but it is the bomb! i give it five stars because the author didnt hold anything back. and it does have a moral to the story. dont mess with the game, cuz its not a game you may be on top but you will hit the bottom for sure.

The Psychology of Sales Call Reluctance: Earning What You're Worth
Published in Paperback by Behavioral Science Research Pr (June, 1999)
Authors: George W. Dudley and Shannon L. Goodson
Average review score:

Powerful, innovative and pragmatic
The Psychology of Sales Call Reluctance will help you truly Earn What You're [REALLY] Worth.Although I have long been a fan of the motivational books and still feel they have a place in success, too often, as pointed out by Dudley and Goodson, sales people ignore what they really need the most. For example, someone who is great at setting goals but a poor organizer goes to all the goal and motivation seminars, reads all the books and listens to all the tapes on those subjects but ignores organization. Some of the prescriptions such as *thought zapping, *sensory injection*negative image projection *thoughtrealignment and target reversal can eliminate negative thought habits in prospecting and making sales calls. I've used them. They work. The call reluctance self rating scale on pages 27, 28 and 29 will help you to identify your own individual type of call reluctance or call imposter.I think some sales people have been giving this book low scores because you won't find the silly, feel good type of fluff that is in other popular sales training guides or techniques on how to close a sale. Sales judo, features and benefits, gimmicky or 1980's type sales techniques that don't work anymore etc. This book will show you how to identify weaknesses in your sales personality that can help turn you into a sales winner. For more on sales technique I recommend Advanced Selling Techniques, Close the Deal or the Sandler Sales Method. We've entered a new millenium and these technques will be a powerful tool for all sales people who want to excel in the 21st century.Good luck and great selling to you.

Astoundingly good for a book on sales!
This book is magnificent! I have been in sales and top sales management in communications for 40 years. I never had much of a good thing to say about any book on selling. Most were and are disappointments. This one is truely a breakthrough. Yes, if you're an excuse-maker, or prefer to whine and complain instead of making sales, you won't like it. You might even feel compeled to call the scientists who wrote the book, "fradulent" (read one of the reviews by Diaz.) Then read the book. The author's credentials are impeccable and they cover their steps with the one thing missing from "reviews" like diaz's, hard evidence.) People like Diaz are right about one thing. This book won't appeal to everyone. It is a serious affront to mediocrity! Speaking from experience, sales directors can't afford not to confront what's in this treasure. The part about Oppositional Reflex rattled my world and taught me how to "see" sales people who always have a lot to say but never seem to have a lot of sales. I challenge my colleagues in sales management to park their egos and read this book!

Are *You* Earning What You're Worth?
Let me get the negative out of the way first. The authors are just a bit sarcastic for my taste, and in particular, they take a number of what I think are cheap shots at Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). Of course, since I'm a Meta-NLP / Neuro-Semantics Master Practitioner and Trainer, one would expect me to react that way, wouldn't one?

In any event, if you can get past the sarcasm, the subtle and not-so-subtle putdowns of other folks in the sales training industry -- and I certainly did -- this book is great! It's filled with practical techniques for diagnosing whether or not you have call reluctance, which type you have, and what to do about it. The authors are psychologists who have studied the psychology of selling in excruciating statistical detail. Given that I'm a statistician myself as well as an executive sales coach, you can imagine why I like this book.
